Women taking care of women. That’s the motto of the Soroptimist International of Ukiah. As a volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, local chapter president Tami Glasco has donated the club’s biannual gift to SART at Ukiah Valley Medical Center. SART, an acronym for Sexual Assault Response Team, is a multidisciplinary interagency team who focuses on specialized sexual assault intervention services. “This year’s gift will allow for two nurses at Ukiah Valley Medical Center to be trained and certified as sexual assault responders,” stated Glasco. The $300 scholarship is part of an ongoing commitment that Soroptimist International of Ukiah has made to the community. Two years ago under the direction of outgoing president Anne Holden, the SI of Ukiah purchased a colposcope for UVMC’s emergency department. A colposcope is an instrument used during sexual assault examinations that can assess a patient’s condition and provide details to help apprehend and prosecute those who perpetrate violence against women. Since the $6000 gift of the colposcope two years ago, UVMC has been able to enhance adult exams and complement the medical center’s telemedicine equipment of providing pediatric sexual assault exams. “We are grateful to the Soroptimists for being such valuable partners,” commented Tim Rohan, a registered nurse and director of the UVMC emergency and trauma department. “A woman or child goes through enough being raped and the easier we can make her reporting of this crime, the better for her,” supported Glasco. Glasco has served as president of the SI of Ukiah for the year and will continue to serve an additional term. Each year outgoing or continuing president selects the recipient of the organization’s support. |
